Taking lessons learned from last year, organizers of The Great Lakes Sports & Entertainment Law Academy (GLSELA) believe that this summer’s academy will be among the best educational opportunities around for sports law students.
It’s hard to argue with them.
The event, which is hosted by Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio, provides participants with four or six credit hours as transient credit back to your home institution.
It also provides “practical lawyer training through simulation-based exercises that focus on doctrine, drafting and negotiation for professional athletes and entertainers, venues and franchises, while learning from a distinguished faculty made up of … upper-level management of professional sports franchises.”
In addition, students this year can not only attend classes in person, but also complete courses online via live, interactive sessions, or asynchronously through recorded sessions.
“The 2014 GLSELA was the first year we offered a distance learning option to our students, and the end result was a wonderful educational experience for those students,” said Peter Carfagna, who created the academy, teaches sports law and is Chairman/CEO of Magis, LLC, a privately owned sports marketing, management and investment company. “The future of education lies with technology and the ability to ‘flip’ the classroom. When students are able to watch lecture videos beforehand, and focus on discussions and practical exercises in class, the overall understanding and ability to implement the materials is vastly improved.
“Through the Distance Learning offerings of the Academy, we have been able to reach all of our students on another level. Our pre-class videos and recordings will allow us to focus on substantive drafting and practical hypotheticals in class in the 2015 Academy. Additionally, we will visit Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians, to speak with their executives regarding the recent renovations to the stadium — again adding unprecedented substance to the course.
“In the future, we will look to expand our online offerings in these and other courses, so we can continue to maximize the reach and learning experiences for our students.
“The Academy provides students with the opportunity to take a deeper dive into the legal and substantive aspects of the materials.”
