Sports Litigation Alert has learned that John Long, a seasoned sports lawyer specializing in NCAA compliance matters, has joined Bond, Schoeneck & King PLLC, a high-profile leader in that sports law niche for more than two decades.
Long was previously at Lewis Brisbois, joining that firm as a partner about a year ago. Prior to that, he was at Jackson Lewis P.C., starting in September of 2016. Long has worked closely with sports lawyer Gregg Clifton, who previously led the sports law practice at Jackson Lewis and now at Lewis Brisbois.

Long, who earned his bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin and his law degree from Marquette University Law School (earning the prestigious National Sports Law Institute’s Certificate of Sports Law), joined Bond from Michael Best & Friedrich. There, he was a senior counsel member in the firm’s Labor and Employment Relations Practice Group and led its NCAA and Athletic Compliance Practice.
Prior to joining Michael Best & Friedrich, Long owned and operated his own firm where he specialized in investigations, NCAA infractions representation, NCAA and Title IX compliance reviews, Academic Performance Program Data Reviews and Athlete-Agent matters.
When Lewis Brisbois hired him last year, the firm noted that he “has extensive experience and success in higher education matters involving collegiate athletics, representing dozens of universities in NCAA compliance and infractions matters. He is considered the most accomplished NCAA infractions appeals attorney in the country.”
