Maine Governor Janet Mills has named Ogletree Deakins attorney Steve Silver chair of the state’s Gambling Control Board. Following the Governor’s nomination, the Maine Senate voted unanimously to confirm Silver to the position. By statute, the five-member Board regulates and supervises the ownership and operations of Maine’s two casinos, oversees advance deposit wagering, reviews license applications, and conducts disciplinary hearings for licensees. In 2018, Silver taught the state’s first ever course focused on sports betting at the University of Maine School of Law. He has written extensively about gaming law issues for Vice Sports and Above the Law, and has also been quoted in numerous national publications.
