The parents of a high school wrestler have sued several New York school districts as well as the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Inc. (NYPHSAA) and Section VI of the NYPHSAA, alleging negligence in connection with the head injuries that Ethan P. Hutschenreuter suffered in a wrestling match on Dec. 14, 2018.
The plaintiffs allege Ethan was a member of the Alden Central School District’s high school wrestling team that was participating in the NYPHSAA Section VI tournament at Starpoint High School, which is part of the Starpoint Central School District. Both school districts were named as defendants in the complaint, as was the Frontier Central School District. The wrestler competing against Ethan in the 138-pound division was a student at Frontier High School.
Ethan’s parents, Paul and Kristen Hutschenreuter, contend that the defendants’ “negligence, recklessness and/or carelessness” resulted in Ethan sustaining “serious bodily injuries to his head, neck and back, which include, but are not limited to: pain and suffering, mental anguish and loss on enjoyment of life, disability and medical expenses.” Because of that alleged negligence, the plaintiffs “have incurred and will incur expenses for the medical care and treatment of (Ethan).”
