The University of Baltimore School of Law announced earlier this year that it would be launching an Institute for Sports and the Law, which will leverage existing sport law connections in the Baltimore area to create a curriculum for students as well as opportunities for them to work in the sports law field.
Law School Dean Phillip J. Closius was joined by Baltimore Ravens President Dick Cass, Baltimore Orioles Vice President Lou Kousouris and Sports agent Tom Condon in making the announcement
UB sports law professor Dionne L. Koller will serve as director of the Institute.
She told The Daily Record that the close ties to the pro sports franchises in town as well as agents was a powerful impetus for the creation of the Institute, in that the participation of such executives will provide real-world examples of what the students learn in class, “We’re not talking about the way it should be done, we’re talking with people who do it every day,” she told Baltimore’s legal newspaper.
The Institute, which will stage an amateur sports law symposium every fall and a professional sports law symposium during the spring, hopes to establish a pipeline for students to sports law jobs
Closius even confirmed that the Orioles have agreed to take one law student as an intern each semester, and the Ravens are looking into offering a similar internship.
