May 3, 2013

The North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), an organization that is “actively involved in supporting and assisting professionals working in the fields of sport, leisure and recreation,” has announced that Mel Young will be the keynote speaker at its annual conference, set for May 28-31 in Austin, Texas.

Young is the President and co-Founder Homeless World Cup – an annual tournament that unites teams of homeless people from all around the globe. Supporting grassroots soccer programs and social enterprise development via a network of 70+ national partners, the Homeless World Cup uses the power of football to energize homeless people so they can change their own lives.

Sponsoring the talk, which is entitled “How a Ball Can Change the World,” is Hackney Publications, the nation’s leading publisher of sports law periodicals.

Young is recognized as one of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship and a Schwab Fellow of the World Economic Forum. He co-founded The Big Issue in Scotland in 1993; co-founded Senscot (Social Entrepreneurs Network Scotland); and is the former President and Honorary President of INSP (International Network of Street Papers). He is a lifelong supporter of Hibernian Football Club and is the author of Goal: The Story of the Homeless World Cup.

“Mel represents an amalgamation of scholarship and practice in the area of sport development and life quality that will bring perspective and spark conversations among the NASSM constituents,” said NASSM’s Conference Director, Dr. Marlene Dixon. “We are excited to have him here in Austin.”
