Phillies Names Richard L. Strouse Vice President and General Counsel

Feb 12, 2010

The Philadelphia Phillies announced last month that Richard L. (Rick) Strouse has joined the organization as vice president and general counsel. Strouse replaces Bill Webb, who stepped down from his position as General Counsel to assume a part-time role with the organization.

Prior to joining the Phillies, Strouse served as a Senior Partner in the Litigation Department at the Ballard Spahr law firm. He was also a member of the firm’s Labor/Employment, Health Care, and Higher Education practice groups. He had practiced law at Ballard Spahr since 1981. During his time there, Strouse represented the Phillies on numerous matters.

Strouse said that he had “the good fortune of spending 29 years with a class organization. And now I have the good fortune to work for another class organization. Serving as General Counsel for the Phillies really is my dream job and I am very excited by this opportunity.”

Strouse was an honors graduate from Duke University School of Law and has a summa cum laude undergraduate degree from Bucknell University.

Meanwhile, Bill Webb, who acted as the Phillies principal legal counsel since 1978 – first as outside general counsel while practicing at Ballard Spahr and then after joining the club as in-house Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel in 2000 – will continue on the club’s executive staff, in the new role of Secretary and Counsel.

“Bill has made an enormous contribution to the club over the years,” said Phillies President David Montgomery. “He is a tireless worker who has provided us with excellent counsel. We have all benefited from his sound judgment.”
