Hardly a surprise to NFL fans, the league revealed last Friday that the number of diagnosed concussions in the NFL increased during the 2022 season. In a conference call, the NFL said there were 149 concussions this season, 18 percent more than the 126 diagnosed concussions in 2021. Further, there were more in-game concussion evaluations last year, which clearly could have been one of the reasons that there were more diagnosed concussions. And that’s a good thing, according to the NFL Chief Medical Officer Dr. Allen Sills, who pointed to the league’s focus of getting the “head out of the game.” Sills added that the league will “continue to become more cautious and conservative in our evaluation and diagnosis of concussions.”
