Davidoff Malito & Hutcher announced last month that it would launch a sports and entertainment practice in New York City. Edward Schauder will serve as chairman of the new practice area.
“Ed brings to us an impressive background in the worlds of sports and entertainment,” said Jeff Citron, co-managing partner at Davidoff Malito & Hutcher. He added that Schauder is the logical choice since he has been closely involved in both the legal and business sides of the sports and entertainment industries for decade.
The sports and entertainment group was created to leverage extensive legal and business experience aimed at servicing the needs of sports and entertainment celebrities and their agents, according to the firm. To that end, Schauder has represented a diverse group of producers, entertainers, property brands and sports-related organizations.
In addition to closely working within the sports and entertainment industries, Schauder has extensive experience in corporate and finance law. Previously, he worked in Haynes and Boone LLP’s finance practice where he handled complex corporate and finance transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, private debt and equity offerings, SEC compliance and general corporate planning. Mr. Schauder will also be a member of Davidoff Malito & Hutcher’s corporate and securities law group.
Schauder noted that it was great to be on board. “I’m committed to using my experience to raise the firm’s sports profile. I’ve made strong contacts throughout my years in the industry and throughout my time representing the World Police and Fire Games. I’m excited to lead this new practice.”
Schauder co-founded the Negro League Baseball Players Association in 1990 as part of a successful effort to obtain recognition and financial assistance for members of baseball’s Negro leagues. He also pioneered the practice of grouping championship sports teams and other groups of performers with shared historical accomplishments, in an effort to maximize their value, according to the firm. Sports teams he has helped organize and represent include the 1969 New York Mets, the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team, the 1977 New York Yankees, the 1972 Miami Dolphins and the 1989 New York Giants.
Schauder earned his law degree from Columbia Law School.
