The former head football coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe has sued his former employer for breach of contract, after he was allegedly forced out of the job because of his involvement in a traffic accident.
According to police reports, Mike Collins lost control of the 2003 Chevrolet truck he was driving shortly before 12:30 a.m. April 4, 2003, and crashed into a Monroe home.
Collins was booked on suspicion of drunken driving, though he refused to take a breath analysis test. At trial, attorney Todd Newman successfully argued that Collins suffered from sleep apnea. The court agreed that it was possible, and Collins was given a lesser sentence.
In his complaint, Collins noted that he was “informed he would be terminated … “within a few hours (after the arrest) and before any investigation was complete.” Collins is seeking damages for lost salary, as well as vacation, health and sick leave benefits.
Collins is currently linebacker coach at LSU.
