Lamont Jones, former Executive Director of USA Boxing and a lawyer for the firm of Holland & Hart LLP in Colorado Springs, has been named General Counsel & Director of Business Affairs for USA Track & Field (USATF), CEO Craig A. Masback announced last month.
A 1993 graduate of Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and a 1990 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Oklahoma, Jones has negotiated complex sports, entertainment, and business contracts and has represented corporate and individual clients in high-profile litigation matters.
“We are extremely pleased to welcome Lamont Jones to USA Track & Field,” Masback said. “His legal experience with outstanding firms such as Holland & Hart and Quinn Emanuel as well as his experience in the Olympic Family and the sports world mark him as especially qualified for the position as USATF General Counsel. He is universally regarded as a professional of the highest quality and integrity with tremendous relationship-building skills that will serve him well at USATF.”
While at USA Boxing, Jones directed and supervised the National Governing Body on all levels, including managing litigation, establishing new business relationships with prominent alumni and blue-chip sponsors, launching a stipend program for athletes, conducting negotiations with event organizers, and spearheading an international relations effort. He established a grassroots development department designed to help narrow the gulf between those supporting elite athlete fund allocation and those supporting grassroots programs.
“I look forward to working with Craig Masback and the leadership of USA Track & Field to help keep its athletes and programs at the forefront of the Olympic movement,” Jones said.
Jones will begin at USATF on September 4. In the interim, Jones will act as USATF’s outside counsel while fulfilling existing obligations at Holland & Hart. Recently recognized as the top law firm in the Denver metropolitan area by Corporate Board Member magazine, Holland & Hart also will provide assistance to USATF in other legal specialty areas.
