The Sport and Recreation Law Association (SRLA)’s 23rd Annual Conference on Sport, Physical Activity, Recreation and Law is set to take place on March 4-6, 2010 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The SRLA is a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to “further the study and dissemination of information regarding the legal aspects of sports and recreation” in both the public and private sectors.
SRLA’s conference schedule includes many hot-button and controversial issues in sports law. Among the topics for sessions offered are transgender athletes, sudden deaths in sport, gender inequity, liability for spectators and participants, team prayer, drug testing, coach-parent relations, recruiting, and social networking and media issues. In particular, there will be two sessions studying the Oliver v. NCAA case: “Tentacles of Power”: A socio-legal exploration of Oliver vs. NCAA (2009), presented by Dinh, Leong, Killick, Krueger, & Ciccolella, and Student-Athletes’ Right to Counsel: Oliver Case Establishes Precedent…Almost, presented by Kobritz & Palmer.
The conference workshop this year will be Teaching Innovations presented by the Teaching Initiatives Committee on Thursday, March 4. On Friday, the schedule kicks off with a professional round table panel discussion: Title IX: New Accountability for High School Athletic Departments.
