A former Texas Christian University (TCU) wide receiver has settled his lawsuit against the university.
In 2018, plaintiff Kolby Listenbee named TCU coach Gary Patterson, the university and the Big 12 Conference as defendants in a lawsuit in which he alleged TCU coach Gary Patterson, assistant coaches and team doctors pressured him to play through injuries, which prematurely cut short his NFL career.
Listenbee was injured during a touchdown reception in September 2015 game during his senior season.
Because of the injury, Listenbee was diagnosed with pelvic instability. Rather than being allowed to recover, he was given steroidal injections so that he could endure the pain while continuing to play for TCU, according to the lawsuit.
The plaintiff claimed that the medical steroid injections and lack of recovery time caused damage to his pelvic cartridge. He later had to have his bones fused by a metal plate.
Listenbee sought more that $1 million due to the impact on his college football career at TCU, and the alleged damage to his potential professional football career. He was joined in his lawsuit by other athletes — David Johnson, Cameron White, Lonta Hobbs, Ed Wesley, and Stansly Maponga — who claimed to have similar experiences.
According to the lawsuit, “The systematic scheme allows injured players to receive subpar treatment for their serious injuries, gives the coaches premature return-to-play decision when serious injury or harm could be caused, and creates an inherent conflict of interest.”
