Fox Rothschild has announced the addition of veteran attorney Tyrone P. “Ty” Thomas as a partner in its Entertainment & Sports Law Department.
Thomas, who joins the firm’s Washington office while also maintaining a presence in New York, brings more than two decades of experience advising universities, professional sports teams, collegiate athletics programs and senior executives on complex employment, compensation and compliance matters.
“Ty has 20 years of experience handling high-profile employment, compliance and executive compensation matters for professional athletes and organizations at all levels,” said Doug P. Hibshman, managing partner of Fox Rothschild’s Washington office. “We are thrilled to welcome him to our growing sports law team.”
Before joining Fox Rothschild, Thomas served as a partner at Holland & Knight, where he was co-chair of the firm’s Sports Industry Team. Throughout his career, Thomas has developed a national reputation for his work in executive compensation, governance and sports law, particularly in the evolving college athletics landscape.
His practice includes advising institutions and sports organizations on name, image and likeness agreements, NCAA enforcement investigations, sponsorship and endorsement arrangements, executive employment contracts, and internal investigations involving allegations of workplace misconduct, financial impropriety and regulatory violations.
Thomas also has extensive experience serving as outside general counsel to sports-related entities and advising boards, presidents and compensation committees on governance, IRS regulations and executive transition matters. His work has involved executive employment and compensation arrangements at more than 300 academic institutions.
In intercollegiate athletics, Thomas has represented colleges and universities on Title IX issues, privacy concerns, compliance matters and appeals tied to NCAA penalties. In professional sports, he has counseled teams on league compliance and employment-related legal issues.
Beyond his legal practice, Thomas is recognized as a thought leader in higher education and sports law. He has been a frequent speaker for organizations such as the American Council on Education, the National Association of College and University Attorneys, and the Council of Independent Colleges. His legal analysis has been featured by outlets including The New York Times, ESPN, Forbes, Bloomberg and Sports Litigation Alert.
Thomas earned his law degree from Tulane University Law School, where he serves on the school’s Sports Law Advisory Board, and his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College.
His accolades include receiving Chambers North America’s “Diversity and Inclusion: Outstanding Contribution” award in 2022.
