Alain Mathieu has joined Foley Hoag as a partner in the firm’s Litigation Department and will chair its newly formed Sports and Entertainment Group, the firm announced May 26.
Mathieu will be based in Foley Hoag’s Boston office.
Managing Partner Jim Bucking said Mathieu’s experience representing athletes, entertainers and sports organizations would support the firm’s work in litigation, investigations and transactions.
Mathieu advises professional athletes, entertainers, companies, agencies, agents, teams, leagues, brands, creatives and executives on business and personal matters, according to the firm. His practice also includes contract disputes, government investigations and intellectual property litigation.
Mathieu said Foley Hoag’s litigation, intellectual property and transactional practices would support his client work and the development of the new group.
He serves as vice chair of the board of Crossroads and is also a board member of The Wily Network, Shooting Touch and the Eddie-Mae Robbie Foundation. He serves on the advisory boards of The Foundation to Be Named Later, the Concussion & CTE Foundation and Harlem Lacrosse Boston.
Foley Hoag said Mathieu also maintains a pro bono practice representing victims of domestic and sexual violence and refugees.
Before joining Foley Hoag, Mathieu worked at another Boston-based law firm, Prince Nobel Tye LLP. He also recently served for nearly six months as interim general counsel of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, where he advised the authority’s chief executive officer and board of directors.
Mathieu also worked for Mintz for seven years, where he was active in the firm’s sports and entertainment practice group.
Mathieu received his law degree from Boston College Law School and his bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College.
